For the lazy ones, i also made a short video of our adventures... For the moment only images from the farm life, the rest is coming... 👇 During the harvest of our veggies, fruits or nuts we often encounter some that have different shapes than the others. I want to use this moment to share with you some of the most curious encounters that we had this year :)
Ever since we moved to the orchard, our after-work cooking sessions in the kitchen got longer and longer. Having a lot of space outside the kitchen, we formed in our heads the idea of building a small herbal garden with our favourite herbs, that we could use for our meals. Quickly, we made a small drawing of what we imagined and without a lot of problems we found some wood that we could use for our project.
With the knowledge in woodworking that we acquired in our time at the farm, we were able to build a wooden box for our herbs. We filled it with some compost and earth from the farm and put our favourite plants inside. After that, we were enjoying a lots of dishes and especially salads with our own herbs, what always made them a little more special! Especially the basil felt very comfprtable next to our kitchen and grew bigger everyday. As a personal project for my volunteering, my plan was to build a wooden game. In Germany we call it „Wikingerschach“ or „Kubb“. It is a fun game for outside, that you can play with almost the whole family. The main goal is to throw wooden sticks onto the wooden figures of the opposite team. So all you need is some good aim! For more information check out the rules in the document at the bottom. The goal for my personal project was to make my own game with a personal touch. My plan was to burn some drawings onto the wood. I decided to go for a farm-related topic and drew different kinds of weeds onto the wood. It reminded me of our daily struggle against the weeds at the farm and it seemed like a fun version of the game, which I then called “Weeds agains Volunteers”.
We have the pleasure to present you the volunteering-team for Društvo EkoPot 2023! Anais Darenes – 28 years old – France
After studying International Business for 5 years and working as a financial auditor for 2 years, I quit it to join an association for ecology and solidarity first as a volunteer and then as a project and advocacy manager for 4 years. My time ended in this association and I had to think about what I wanted to do next. I always had sustainable agriculture in mind, but except for short workaways and volunteering in an urban farm, I never had the chance to experience reel farming. As I really liked French volunteering, the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) was a good option for me to experience farming in a serious and framed way. I read about the Društvo EkoPot project on the ESC webpage and found it pretty well fitted for me. After an online meeting with Maja, it ended up convincing me that it was what I needed and Slovenia a new adventure ! I chose this project because, as a person that always lived in big cities, I really wanted to experience long-term farming and to learn as much as I can about organic agriculture. The objective in the end, is to know if this is really the path I want to take in the future. …I’ll let you know in the end how it went for me ! Donato Romano - 29 years old - Italy Hi everybody! I’m Donato from Italy. I studied science and technologies of agriculture and after the three-year degree I started the master’s degree, but something got broken. I decided to start a new life beginning with an ESC volunteering; I really liked the Društvo EkoPot offer and so here I am (rock you like a hurricane [quote]). A month has already passed, I am trying to find a new balance here. I am having a really good time in Maribor and I can’t wait to see how everything will evolve in the next months. To be continued… Martha - 23 years old - Germany Hello! My name is Martha, I am 23 years old and from Germany. Until the summer of 2022, I was studying Biomedical Engineering in Bavaria. Even though I really liked studying, I didn’t feel ready to work in a long term bureau job afterwards and decided that I want to try something completely different. That is why I registered for the ESC program. In September, I found the Društvo EkoPot project and it instantly caught my attention. I wanted to do something meaningful, for the environment and for myself. I was also looking forward to working outside and getting more knowledge about agriculture. The project met all of my expectations, and it seemed perfect for me. I was very happy when I was invited to an interview and talking to Maja made the decision of going to Slovenia very easy for me. Now I am here since the first of March and I feel more than lucky to be one of the few people that have this opportunity of learning a lot about agriculture and exploring new possibilities for 8 months. I am sure that I, as well as we as the whole team, will have to master a lot of challenges, but we will also experience a lot of wonderful things during our stay in Slovenia. Unai Bilbao – 25 years old – Spain Through my volunteering experiences I’ve seen myself more into community living and non-formal education as a way to grow as a person, connected also with my university studies on Politics, Economy and Philosophy and later a master in Community development. In the working sphere, the latest job I’ve been doing was in an NGO in the research area for social projects in an office atmosphere. Now, however, I felt it was the proper time for a change and to move forward with a long term experience in agriculture. Therefore, I was interested in knowing more about farming and seeing myself in this kind of environment. This main reason pulled me to be here now, being part of the project held by Društvo EkoPot, which is based in Slovenia. I’ve felt it was the proper Project in terms of learning about what it means to be an organic farmer. Also I’ve been in central/eastern Europe before and it’s been very inspiring getting to know a part of Europe which is far away from Spain. In this sense, as a friend always says to me: “In the openness lies the sublime”, so I hope I’m open to see, feel and appreciate what this new context can bring to my personal life.
